Description

The royal palace of the Oba of Benin is a UNESCO listed heritage site, centrally located near the King’s Square. The palace was built by Oba Ewedo, who was believed to have lived between 1255AD and 1280AD and is located at the heart of ancient city of Benin. It was rebuilt by Oba Eweka II (1914-1932) after the original building was destroyed during the 1897 was with the British. It holds a huge collection of sculptural pieces of a lot of Benin Obas in bronze, ancestral shrines and ivory. The Royal Palace of Oba of Benin is a celebration and preservation of the rich Benin culture. Most of the visitors to the palace are curators, archaeologists or historians.
